Activities

Art Club
-Clair Rosenberger

Art Club is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who enjoy creating art!  Our purpose is to promote interest in art while creating artwork for the school and community.  We have a maximum membership of 20 students.

Art Club meets the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 8:10 AM in the Art Room.  Our first meeting will be September 2, 2010.  If you are interested in joining art club, please give Ms. Rosenberger your application by Friday, August 27th.  You can pick up an application in the art room, from your homeroom teacher, or through the On My Calendar Art Website.

Interscholastic competition for eighth grade boys and girls. Students must meet academic eligibility requirements. Tryouts are held in the fall.

It is a student-led organization for students to meet for devotional and fellowship activities. It allows for leadership opportunities at all grade levels and is open to all students.

Chorus Club is open to 6th,7th and 8th grade students who like to sing. It will meet once a week on Thursdays before school from 8:10 am - 9:00 am.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through problem solving. Using problems written by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Mathcounts goal is to provide today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematic careers.

Competition in December to anyone who would like to take the test.
The top 8 kids go to regionals.

We meet every Thursday at 8:15 in Mrs. Wilson's room in Bay Creek Hall.

Reader's Rally

Readers Rally is a quiz bowl style competition for students in grades 4-12. Each week we talk about the Georgia Book Award books we are reading as we plan and train for the competition later in the year. Each Gwinnett County school may send one team of up to 10 players to the Readers Rally.

Readers Rally meets every Friday at 8:15 in the media center
The 2010 Readers Rally will be held on Feb. 12th at Berkmar High School. Opening Ceremonies will begin at 9:00 a.m. The competition should be over by 2:00 p.m.The top 2 Middle School and High School teams will also participate in a Championship on Thursday, Feb. 17 at the ISC.

Scholars Bowl

This is McConnell’s quiz bowl team and it consists of 6th, 7th and 8thgraders.
The Team competes with other metro-Atlanta schools on Saturdays. 

Team practices every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30 in Room 1.165.
There are about 6-8 tournaments a year.

Student Council

The student council provides a forum for student-leader interaction across all grade levels.
Participation in the student council is determined by peer elections held near the beginning of each school year.
The rules for elections and guidelines for student council participation are outlined in a constitution that is written and approved by the student leaders.

The student council is currently evaluating options for routine service projects for the participants and the student body as a whole.
Meetings will be held bi-monthly.

This group of students forms our school's daily morning news show.

 We train daily in the studio from 9:00am to 9:15 am for those students whose week it is to be on the crew. 

Chess Club

Chess Club is a great opportunity to learn problem solving skills, while getting to know your McConnell neighbors.  We strive to be "Productive Members" of our community.  Come and join us every Thursday.

Chess Club Starts August 26th, 2010.
Chess Club is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students attending McConnell Middle School.  We will meet every Thursday at 8:15 am in Mr. Lininger's room, (2.214 in the Tiger Tower). 

Tiger Guard

The purpose of this Organization is to promote and uphold school spirit, to entertain the crowd with a well developed performance, and to set examples of academic achievement and behavior that the student body can respect and follow.  The Tiger Guard program at MMS provides an opportunity for 8th grade students who have specialized skills, agility and coordination to participate in this group while being leaders of the school environment and the community.  This year long activity is a vital part of the school’s extracurricular program as well as the performing arts programs.

Tiger Guard will perform at home basketball games, they will march in the Grayson Day Parade, and they will have a winter and spring performance at McConnell Middle School.

This club promotes cultural awareness in the school and community.  The club include 7th and 8th graders that are recommended by their teachers based on good conduct, strong leadership skills, and good peer communication.

We will meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 8:15 - 9:00 AM, attend POP conference and be involved in school projects throughout the school year.
